about

On July 23, 2011 Amy Winehouse died from alcohol poisoning. It was a Saturday.

I remember I felt so sick watching all the vitriol people all over social media spewed at the death of this poor, talented young woman. She was all alone in front of the entire world, baring her soul and her scars and I couldn’t believe so many folks were suggesting she deserved her tragic death because of her public struggle with substance abuse. I think it’s pretty obvious that those who are in pain seek relief wherever they can find it, and addiction is not a moral failing but a mental disorder.

I wrote this song for Amy on the night that she died, and for nearly 8 years I never played it live or showed anyone because I was embarrassed, I think. I am no longer embarrassed to play this song or to say that I loved Amy Winehouse and that I find her passion and soul inspiring.

It’s a blessing and a curse to feel too much within, especially in a cruel and indifferent world, but we can’t lose that feel because it’s so vital. We need it to find each other; to remind us in our most desolate and detached hours that we are absolutely not alone. Not alone here and not alone in our suffering.

Amy deserved better from this world and so do you.

lyrics

Tonight you took the long way home
Wired tighter than your cellular phone
Searching G-d's green earth
For some original sin
Another weekend
Drowning in the dust bin

And all the things you do alone
How do they help you now?
You take the money or your life
All that's left is a countdown
To the final clock out

Like poor Amy, dead and gone
And 27 years ins't long
And it's a hard pill to swallow
But an easy rabbit hole for a junkie turned cultural icon

Oh Amy, no, no no
Folks these days don't have souls
And on a Saturday, you should have known
That all these clones are playing shows of their own
Yeah, all these clones are playing shows of their own
Well, I won't go

Here's to you, Amy
Another singing ghost
It's a shame to know
Your generation hung you for your illness
On their bullshit wall posts
But that's the way that it is
And I think it's most sad for those kids
Growing up with nothing real to hear
Except the ringing in their ears
After a violent parade of advertisements
There are no more heroes
Nor am I sure there ever should have been
But here's to the fuck ups
With any degree of sincere passion

Oh Amy, no, no, no
Folks these days don't have soul
And on a Saturday
You know, you should have known
That all these clones are playing shows of their own
Yeah, all these clones are playing shows of their own
Oh yeah, all these clones are playing shows of their own

Well, I won't go.
