about

Live performance of the song You Won't Look Back by Cameron Smith at Café Solo Studios in Denton, TX
Audio and video recorded and mixed by Chris Howell

about this song:

There's a light that shines in man that the darkness has got to have. . .

You know the joke about the drunk looking for his keys under a streetlight?

A cop comes over to lend a hand and after a few minutes of searching on their hands and knees, cop looks up and asks the drunk,
“You sure this is where you lost your keys, friend?”

“Nah,” the drunk replies, “I lost them over there in the park.”

“So, why are we looking here under this lamp?”

“This is where the light is,” the drunk smiles.

When I wrote this song I thought I was working up a classic American folk style murder ballad

But that isn’t what I wound up with

Instead this is some unlikely redemption song; one side of a two sided story, teetering between light and dark along a winding and weary path

About swan diving into the abyss, confronting life’s transient nature, and seeking seraphic purpose there between the resolve of an undying spirit and the entropy of an indifferent world

I suppose that’s where the light was shining on that particular night

I finished writing this song to find one key murder ballad ingredient missing: no one dies

Not in this song anyway.

lyrics

I have reclaimed my tomorrow
Yeah, I've seen a holy vision
And I have offered up my sorrow
Now I am not looking for permission

I'm leaving home to find you
I hope that you never do forget
Or I hope that time still reminds you
To savor all of the time that you've got left

A shadow takes you by the hand
And leads you down that darkening path
And if I don’t see your face again
That’s just cause I know you won’t look back
And a shadow never leaves a track

But leaving for good
Was so much easier back then
And when I’m just so all alone
I wonder if I’ll ever see old friends again

But when I get there to get you
Oh it won’t matter where we’ve been
No, all that matters is where I’ve left you
And just how I’m gonna make it right again

A shadow traced me where I stand
And disappear down my darkening path
If I don’t see your face again
It’s cause I’m still wandering blind in the black
And you don’t, you won’t look back

But I've found a new tomorrow
And I’ll find my way outta prison
Oh I am trading up my sorrow
And accepting the Lord’s holy mission

There’s a certain sort of aching
A pain like ripples in the sea
Eight billion human hearts all breakin'
And they ring those seven bells inside of me

A shadow fell across this land
It followed us down that darkening path
Cause there’s a light that shines in man
That the darkness has got to have
And when it’s gone you won’t look back
